Types of Employment Permit: Understanding the Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit and the Internship Employment Permit

The Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit and Internship Employment Permit are two separate programmes that enable individuals to work in Ireland for a specific duration.

Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit

For non-EEA nationals who are employed by a company abroad but wish to work in Ireland for a period of time to complete training or provide expertise, an Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit may be an option. This type of permit allows an existing employee of a multinational company to be transferred to a branch, subsidiary, or affiliate of the multinational company in Ireland for up to 2 years initially, with a further renewal of 3 years an option.

Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permits are only available for senior management, key personnel or personnel undergoing training programmes, and various criteria in relation to minimum annual remuneration and the length of time they have been employed with the company must also be met.

The application is made through the Employment Permits Online System (EPOS) and should be submitted at least 12 weeks before the intended transfer date.

Internship Employment Permit

For non-EEA nationals who are in third-level education outside of Ireland but must gain work experience in their area of study to complete their course, an Internship Employment Permit may be applied for. This type of permit allows a full-time third level student who has an internship offer with an Irish employer to work in Ireland for up to 12 months.

In order to be eligible the role offered must be on the Critical Skills Occupations List, the remuneration must be the National Minimum Wage or higher and it must be related to the applicant’s course of study and be intended to enhance their skills, knowledge and experience.

Similarly to the Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit, an application for an Internship Employment Permit is made through EPOS and should be submitted at least 12 weeks before the intended start date.
